Common attic mold causes in Florida

  • Roof leaks after summer storms or hurricanes
  • Bathroom fans venting into the attic
  • Sweating AC ducts and air handlers
  • Blocked soffit or roof vents

How attic mold is removed

  • Inspect decking, rafters, insulation, ducts and vents
  • Find and fix the moisture source first
  • Remove wet or contaminated insulation
  • Clean or treat affected framing and decking; replace damaged sheathing
  • Dry the space and correct ventilation
  • Reinstall insulation once the attic is dry

After a storm

If wind or a hurricane damaged your roof, photograph the damage and report it to your insurer promptly. Water that gets into the attic can grow mold within 24 to 48 hours in Florida heat, so drying fast matters.

Attic mold FAQs

Is mold in the attic serious?

It can be. Attic mold usually means moisture from a roof leak, poor ventilation or a bathroom fan venting into the attic. Left alone it can damage roof decking and insulation, and spores can reach living space through ceiling openings and ductwork.

Will insurance pay for attic mold?

Usually only if the mold came from a sudden covered event, such as storm damage to the roof, and is reported promptly. Mold from long-term leaks or poor ventilation is often excluded, and most Florida policies cap mold at a sublimit, commonly $10,000.

Can I remove attic mold myself?

Attic work is hot, cramped and involves insulation and roof decking. Small surface spots can sometimes be cleaned, but anything larger than about 10 square feet, or mold with damaged decking, is a job for a professional.

How is attic mold prevented?

Fix roof leaks quickly, make sure bathroom and dryer vents exhaust outside, keep soffit and roof vents clear, and have AC ducts and air handlers in the attic sealed and insulated to stop condensation.
